Name: Liz Taylor Age: 21 Height: 5 feet, 4 inches Start Weight: 270 pounds Current Weight: 170 pounds Goal Weight: 135 pounds My Weight Loss Approach: I was a very heavy child growing up. My parents never really restricted what I could eat nor did they restrict my portions. I gained most of my weight in 2007 because I had just graduated high school and was working and going to school. I often ate fast food in huge portions, and I never exercised. I used to take showers with the light off just so I would not have to see my reflection in the bathroom mirror. I was made fun of so much in high school that I was walked to my classes by the student resource officer. I grew to loathe myself. I would look at pictures of myself and think I looked disgusting. I went to my primary care doctor in 2008 because of depression due to my weight and looks. When he weighed me he was astonished at the weight I had gained since my visit just one year earlier. I was nearly 270 pounds at 19 years old. It was in that office in the middle of the afternoon that I made a decision: I could not live my life like that anymore. I decided to lose the weight and dedicate myself to improving myself and my self-image and helping others. Liz Now I now look at exercising and healthy eating as a lifestyle, not just something I need to do for a little while. I have found ways to love exercise, which has truly helped me stay on the path of being healthy. The joy I have found from dedicating myself to health and fitness goes much deeper than losing weight. For the first time in my life, I truly believe in myself. Why I wanted to blog about it: I know there are so many more people out there who are going through the same thing. I didn't want anyone else to have to go through the misery I felt because of my weight. I knew if I wrote about my struggle and what I do to lose weight and get healthy, other people would relate, and maybe they would be able to lose weight, too. The best part of blogging is: The best part of blogging is when I touch other people's lives. My weight has been such a hard struggle since I was a young child, and I know there are so many other people out there with this same issue. She says she always sees me in the gym working out and that since I have joined, she has noticed my weight drop significantly. She told me that she watches what I do for my routines and tries to do the same, and she's lost 15 pounds since Halloween as a result. She cried and told me that it was the best feeling of her life. What's next for my blog: I'm working on turning my blog into a full website to help men and women achieve a healthy lifestyle for life. Not only do I want to blog about my exercise and nutrition tips, stories and experiences, but I also want to interview different doctors and fitness professionals on their tips and secrets. 		<description><![CDATA[Ashley Wisniewski I noticed about a week ago that there are few things less flattering then the bulk of flab that lives between the bend of my arm and my back. Considering I'm going to be wearing a strapless bridesmaid dress in less than 20 weeks, I realize that I have some toning up to do before exposing the world to my undefined upper body. To help with toning, I've started doing Jillan Michaels' "30 Day Shred." Also, I am still running, and I'm halfway to my goal of running 20 miles in January, which I'm really enjoying. In February, I may switch from miles to minutes so that I can focus on the length of time running rather than the mileage. By focusing on time, I think I will end up running more than I do when I focus on the mileage. Becoming a runner and losing weight have been my two weight loss and fitness goals. There was a time a few years ago (2006 to be exactly) when I could wear a size-10 pair of jeans and a medium top and the numbers on the scale were at a very reasonable number; however, if you blinked, you missed this brief moment in my life. Those few months in 2006 are the only time that I remember being less than 200 pounds. I stepped on the scale this morning and it read 209.8. How exciting! I lost another two pounds, and I'm slowly creeping my way to "ONE-derland" and being less than 200 pounds! For a few months I made healthier food choices and worked out. The key phrase being "for a few months." I know what it's like to lose weight, but then I gained it all back. How do I lose weight and maintain my loss? When I was at my lowest weight, I ate healthier foods, but I didn't have a food plan that I could sustain for longer than a few weeks or months at a time. I was eating a very low- to no-carb diet, and unfortunately, when I started eating carbohydrates, I started putting weight back on. At first, I didn't gain much weight, but slowly I noticed that my clothes no longer fit. Those medium tops and size-10 jeans were quickly a distant memory. I don't want to be less than 200 pounds, or running, for only a few months. I want years, hopefully many of them, where I am happy and healthy. I will be thrilled when I break through and arrive at a weight that doesn't involve 200, but I am also okay with it happening at a slow pace. As much as I'd love to wake up tomorrow and be able to meet and exceed my weight loss and fitness goals, if I don't learn how to maintain my weight loss through healthy eating habits, as well make exercise a priority, I will be right back to where I was when I began my quest for a lifestyle change. It doesn't do me any good to lose a whole bunch of weight and rack up running mileage just to relapse back into some very bad habits. I've been there, and I've seen how miserable I am when I regain weight that I've worked so hard to lose. I want to actually maintain my weight loss when I get there and continue to push myself toward even bigger running goals. After decades of dieting only to gain it back, two That's Fit readers have decided to finally rethink their relationship with food and exercise over the next year to move toward a lifetime of fulfilling, healthy living. 		<description><![CDATA[Getty Images As much as I love the holidays, my waistline is very glad that the season of eating is over. I feel like I was mindlessly wandering through various valleys full of sugar-packed treats and carb-heavy side dishes. I am still trying to get back to my pre-Christmas weight and continue my journey toward my goal weight. I am really excited about the New Year! Unfortunately, I've always been one of the "oh, I'll start Monday" type of person, meaning that I always look for a good time to start losing weight, exercising, getting back on track, etc. In reality, every day and every meal is a good time to get back on the healthy track; however, when you are someone like me who really looks forward to a Monday-like start date, the first Monday of a new month of a brand-new year is a gold mine in terms of weight loss motivation. I am so sick of having one of my New Year's resolutions be to lose weight. So my resolution of 2011 is to not start 2012 with a weight loss resolution. My resolution for 2011 is to finally get to a healthy, manageable weight. How do I do that? First, I need to focus on all of the things that I've learned up until now: exercise consistently and make better food choices. Let's go a little deeper. Maybe all along my plan has been too broad. Maybe I need to add in smaller steps along the way toward the bigger picture. I've always been the planning type, both in college and in my professional career. I like detailed and specific action points, which is what I need to apply to my weight loss. Here are the ways I'm going to get to meet my New Year's resolution: 1. Run at least 20 miles each month. I currently run about a mile to a mile and a half per session. This means I need to run 15 to 20 times per month. As I (hopefully) increase my mileage during each run, the miles per month may also increase. 2. Exercise at least four times a week for no less than 30 minutes. I can watch television, read a book, talk on the phone and play online for more than 30 minutes at a time. Over the course of this blog I have done an excellent job of limiting fried foods, such as French fries and potato chips, but they are my fall-back comfort foods. Right now, I know that I am not at a point in my journey where I can allow myself to enjoy these foods in small doses or on special occasions. 4. I will focus on smaller milestones. I have set small rewards for every five to 10 pounds of weight loss. Rewards range from new songs on my MP3 player at my next five-pound loss to a $100 shopping trip when I hit my goal weigh. I have already started saving so that I can treat myself to a few new things. To aid in my weight loss, I will track what I eat, as well as my exercise minutes. I have a separate calendar for writing down my workouts for each day. I can honestly say I have never had more determination or drive to get to where I need to be in terms of my weight, and I look forward to the challenges and successes of 2011!
