Corbis Looks like Starbucks is jumping on the supersize bandwagon along with McDonald's and other fast food chains with its reveal of the Trenta. Trenta, which means "30" in Italian, is the cafe chain's newest size at 31 ounces. That's about four to five cups of coffee in just one drink. Chicago analysts said that the larger-than-life drink could pack as many as 230 calories and lead to weight gain of more than 20 pounds a year in regular consumers. "People need to realize that when they do choose these larger sizes, it's going to lead to excess calories," Dr. Jessica Bartfield, an internal medicine and weight loss specialist at Loyola's Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, told AOL Health. In addition to the caffiene overload, additives like sweeteners, sugars, cream and whole milk make it significantly unhealthier. Supersize drinks at food and beverage chains have recently come under fire for their role in the U.S. obesity epidemic. "They're often a significant source of calories but not of nutrition," Bartfield said. "All they're giving you are empty calories." Starbucks reported that the Trenta size is available only for iced coffees, lemonades and Tazo iced tea drinks. "Unsweetened, the beverages have fewer than 90 calories, and sweetened iced coffee or tea in a Trenta cup has fewer than 230 calories," the company said in an e-mail sent to Nestle, Bartfield and others. "The unsweetened iced tea and iced coffee options are only five calories and fit the needs of customers looking for a refreshing offering at Starbucks." The new size was unveiled Jan. 18 in 14 states. It will be available in California next month, and by May, the whole nation will have the Trenta option. "Be careful what you're ordering," Bartfield warned. "It's not an innocent drink in that it can contribute to extra calories that will, in turn, contribute to weight gain. Bigger is not always better." Visit AOL Health to read more about Starbucks' newest coffee creation. Permalink | Email this | Comments

Astrid Stawiarz, Getty Images I just finished reading Tracy Anderson's new book, and I want to know: Can I change my body type? - Kim Alchemy was a science in the Middle Ages used by chemists that tried to magically transform a common substance of little value -- like, say, a rock -- into an entirely different substance of greater value like gold or silver. It was largely discredited by the Renaissance. That's why I find it so disturbing that now in the 21st century, the concept of alchemy has been revived in book form as "Tracy Anderson's 30-Day Method: the Weight-Loss Kick-Start That Makes Perfection Possible." I won't address most of the outrageous claims made in the book -- false, dangerous or otherwise. Instead, I'll focus on the question at hand: Is it possible to alter your genetic destiny? Tracy Anderson is making a very nice living telling people you can. According to Anderson, you can change a pear shape into a string bean; extend the length of your legs; and generally rearrange bone, muscle and sinew to "take any woman from any genetic background and turn her into this teeny-tiny dancer type """." All it takes is an alarmingly low-calorie diet, two hours of high-impact exercise each and every day of the week, and total self-loathing. .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Can Hypnosis Help Me Lose Weight? Celeb Trainer Tracy Anderson Dishes on Her New Book How Long Does It Take to Gain a Pound of Muscle? Don't get me wrong. I don't doubt that following such a regimen will help you lose weight. If you manage to avoid injury, you might even sculpt some muscle definition, tone your body and look fitter. But will you change the basic shape of your body? It's a physiological impossibility, no more likely than turning a common rock into a brick of gold. You are born with an indelible bone structure and certain metabolic predispositions. This is a scientific fact. Short of surgery, there is simply no way to alter this blueprint. This is not bad news! It allows us all to let go of impossible goals. We petite gals will never look like supermodels. And you tall ladies will never be the "teeny-tiny" creatures Anderson seems to believe every woman should want to be. Once you are free of these absurd -- and, quite frankly, cruel -- expectations, you can concentrate on what is possible: being the best you you can be. Even Anderson's famous clients prove my point. Her benefactor, Gwyneth Paltrow, was always willowy and leggy; thanks to Anderson's regimen, she is more so. Madonna has become an overexaggerated version of what she has always been: short limbed and athletic. Shakira, now a slimmer, blonder iteration of a curvy hourglass figure, is somewhere in the middle. Three different body types following essentially the same workout and diet plan. All of these women looked amazing before they ever stepped into one of Anderson's workout spaces. None of them dramatically changed the shape of their bodies. Yes, all of these stars are certainly thinner now. You can argue whether they look better. They may be able to manage the marathon dance sessions and the expensive, oddly specific meal plans, but they've also put themselves at greater risk for osteoporosis, depression, injury, and the host of other health problems that go along with starvation and overtraining. I don't believe, as Anderson does that "if your body looks old at 50, it's only because you're not making the effort" or that "every woman whose body changes post-pregnancy is just lazy." I certainly do believe that every woman should eat right and be active. Every woman should strive to be at a healthy weight. Every woman should find a way to feel good about the way she looks. Not that you shouldn't work hard, but no woman needs to dedicate a huge chunk of her day and finances to get to where she wants to be health and fitness wise when there are easier, safer and more effective ways to get there. Don't we all have important work to do? I am aware that there are a lot of Anderson groupies out there -- as well as rabid detractors. I'd like to hear from you. Post your comments here or tweet me.
Getty Images As much as I love the holidays, my waistline is very glad that the season of eating is over. I feel like I was mindlessly wandering through various valleys full of sugar-packed treats and carb-heavy side dishes. I am still trying to get back to my pre-Christmas weight and continue my journey toward my goal weight. I am really excited about the New Year! Unfortunately, I've always been one of the "oh, I'll start Monday" type of person, meaning that I always look for a good time to start losing weight, exercising, getting back on track, etc. In reality, every day and every meal is a good time to get back on the healthy track; however, when you are someone like me who really looks forward to a Monday-like start date, the first Monday of a new month of a brand-new year is a gold mine in terms of weight loss motivation. I am so sick of having one of my New Year's resolutions be to lose weight. So my resolution of 2011 is to not start 2012 with a weight loss resolution. My resolution for 2011 is to finally get to a healthy, manageable weight. How do I do that? First, I need to focus on all of the things that I've learned up until now: exercise consistently and make better food choices. Let's go a little deeper. Maybe all along my plan has been too broad. Maybe I need to add in smaller steps along the way toward the bigger picture. I've always been the planning type, both in college and in my professional career. I like detailed and specific action points, which is what I need to apply to my weight loss. Here are the ways I'm going to get to meet my New Year's resolution: 1. Run at least 20 miles each month. I currently run about a mile to a mile and a half per session. This means I need to run 15 to 20 times per month. As I (hopefully) increase my mileage during each run, the miles per month may also increase. 2. Exercise at least four times a week for no less than 30 minutes. I can watch television, read a book, talk on the phone and play online for more than 30 minutes at a time. Shouldn't I devote at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week to improve my health? .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Can't Stick to Your New Year's Resolution? Blame Your Brain Free Nutrition Consultations to Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goal Lisa's New Year Diet Led to a 50-Pound Weight Loss 3. Cut fried foods out of my diet completely. Over the course of this blog I have done an excellent job of limiting fried foods, such as French fries and potato chips, but they are my fall-back comfort foods. Right now, I know that I am not at a point in my journey where I can allow myself to enjoy these foods in small doses or on special occasions. 4. I will focus on smaller milestones. I have set small rewards for every five to 10 pounds of weight loss. Rewards range from new songs on my MP3 player at my next five-pound loss to a $100 shopping trip when I hit my goal weigh. I have already started saving so that I can treat myself to a few new things. To aid in my weight loss, I will track what I eat, as well as my exercise minutes. I have a separate calendar for writing down my workouts for each day. I can honestly say I have never had more determination or drive to get to where I need to be in terms of my weight, and I look forward to the challenges and successes of 2011!
Getty Images After last post's abysmal showing, it seems fitting that my biweekly update on my progress to looking more like Angelina Jolie and less like an inflated brunette. It's a time when all of us are reevaluating our goals, big pictures and, yes, eating habits. I'm forced to examine my goals and resolutions in relation to the process that I've been undertaking for a few months now. In the big picture, I want to look and feel as confident as a Victoria's Secret Angel. But as with many things, I've come to realize that the big, sweeping goal of "I want to be as sculpted as Heidi Klum" can be achieved only through smaller steps. In fact, life coaches, dietitians and trainers all agree that in order to stick with it, you've got to celebrate the small accomplishments. So instead of bingeing my way into a sloth-inducing whirlpool, I'm taking stock of my hits and misses in my battle against the muffin top and other excess flab. I've slashed my overall caloric intake. In addition to drinking loads more water, I've gotten my daily calories to about 1,800 a day. And it's all thanks to that handy-dandy BodyMedia FIT Armband BW machine I've been sporting. It tells me exactly what I'm eating. What's more important than that number is that fact that they are more balanced across food groups. (Sorry, beautiful white carbs, I still love you!) I eat at least two pieces of whole fruit daily in addition to a green juice for breakfast. .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories A Plan to Keep My New Year's Resolutions Escaping From the Pit of Weight Gain Do New Year's Resolutions Work? My hair is shinier. You may think that's a vapid answer to tell you how I'm on the road to a better me, but celeb hair stylist James Corbett once told me that your hair reflects your health. When you are getting the right amount of good vitamins, so is your mane, and it looks more lustrous. I'm stronger. I may have some more to love, but I've also got a significant amount of muscle. How do I know? I can maintain an alignment-correct plank position for a full minute, three times in a row. Watch out counterintelligent spies, here I come. I've added at-home cardio workouts to my weekly routine. I loved that "Bollywood Burn" video so much, I got a new one by the same trainer. "Hemalayaa: Bollywood Party Workout" gets played twice a week, and I feel great after a little dance party by myself. I'm dealing with my urge to binge. I'm a binger by nature, but since my last post, I've been curbing the call of calories with a five-minute stretch on my foam roller. Any time I feel badly about myself, I simply remind my little old bod that powering up on everything in sight won't make me feel any better. And I get on my foam roller. I stretch out my hips, roll over my abs, and just generally lie there and feel better. It's an insta body boost that's helped a ton. If that doesn't completely curb the urge, I have a cup of green tea after. It sounds crazy, but it works. Permalink | Email this | Comments

amazon.com Jillian Michaels has amazing abs -- that's a fact. She puts together a tough workout, as we've seen with "Shred-It With Weights," "30 Day Shred" and more. Therefore, it stands to reason that her "6 Week Six-Pack" DVD would kick some serious, umm, abs, right? The DVD offers two 30- to 35-minute segments -- level one and level two. Both are very similar workouts, but level two takes the moves from level one and kicks it up a notch. In these core workouts, you use a hand weight, though the size is up to you (Michaels and the two women in the video appear to be using rather light weights, but the video doesn't make any recommendations). The workouts each feature a dynamic warm-up, a circuit workout that features short intervals to raise your heart rate and is done twice, and a brief cooldown. Level of Difficulty Like other videos by Michaels, I would put this one in the intermediate to advanced camp. Next-Day Soreness Significant but not debilitating and (not surprisingly) mainly in the abs. Who's It For? Those who like Michaels will, obviously, be drawn to the workouts, but those who are looking for a reasonably short, tough workout that focuses on the core will also enjoy this. Well, at least they'll appreciate it. Likes The workouts are solid -- I was huffing and puffing and sweating in both levels. Despite this being an abs workout, my biceps, shoulders and thighs all felt the movements. That being said, it wasn't so difficult and intense that I couldn't have tacked it on to the end of a run or strength-training workout. Dislikes I wish Michaels had given a bit more in the way of safety instruction. There are a number of moves that involve twisting and swinging your hand weight -- I could see where one could tweak something rather easily. Bottom Line I liked the workouts, and, in fact, my husband (who rarely joins me in checking out DVDs) found both levels to be serious workouts. I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner, and if someone has very little core strength, I'd suggest starting with a very light weight (or none at all, which is shown as an option in level one). Overall, though, it's certainly a keeper, and I see it getting a lot of play when bikini season rolls around! .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Will You Watch DVD Review: Jillian Michaels Jillian Michaels Admits to Nose Job, Blames Bullying Permalink | Email this | Comments
