Astrid Stawiarz, Getty Images I just finished reading Tracy Anderson’s new book, and I want to know: Can I change my body type? – Kim Alchemy was a science in the Middle Ages used by chemists that tried to magically transform a common substance of little value — like, say, a rock — into an entirely different substance of greater value like gold or silver. It was largely discredited by the Renaissance. That’s why I find it so disturbing that now in the 21st century, the concept of alchemy has been revived in book form as “Tracy Anderson’s 30-Day Method: the Weight-Loss Kick-Start That Makes Perfection Possible.” I won’t address most of the outrageous claims made in the book — false, dangerous or otherwise. Instead, I’ll focus on the question at hand: Is it possible to alter your genetic destiny? Tracy Anderson is making a very nice living telling people you can. According to Anderson, you can change a pear shape into a string bean; extend the length of your legs; and generally rearrange bone, muscle and sinew to “take any woman from any genetic background and turn her into this teeny-tiny dancer type “”".” All it takes is an alarmingly low-calorie diet, two hours of high-impact exercise each and every day of the week, and total self-loathing. .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url(“http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon”) no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Can Hypnosis Help Me Lose Weight? Celeb Trainer Tracy Anderson Dishes on Her New Book How Long Does It Take to Gain a Pound of Muscle? Don’t get me wrong. I don’t doubt that following such a regimen will help you lose weight. If you manage to avoid injury, you might even sculpt some muscle definition, tone your body and look fitter. But will you change the basic shape of your body? It’s a physiological impossibility, no more likely than turning a common rock into a brick of gold. You are born with an indelible bone structure and certain metabolic predispositions. This is a scientific fact. Short of surgery, there is simply no way to alter this blueprint. This is not bad news! It allows us all to let go of impossible goals. We petite gals will never look like supermodels. And you tall ladies will never be the “teeny-tiny” creatures Anderson seems to believe every woman should want to be. Once you are free of these absurd — and, quite frankly, cruel — expectations, you can concentrate on what is possible: being the best you you can be. Even Anderson’s famous clients prove my point. Her benefactor, Gwyneth Paltrow, was always willowy and leggy; thanks to Anderson’s regimen, she is more so. Madonna has become an overexaggerated version of what she has always been: short limbed and athletic. Shakira, now a slimmer, blonder iteration of a curvy hourglass figure, is somewhere in the middle. Three different body types following essentially the same workout and diet plan. All of these women looked amazing before they ever stepped into one of Anderson’s workout spaces. None of them dramatically changed the shape of their bodies. Yes, all of these stars are certainly thinner now. You can argue whether they look better. They may be able to manage the marathon dance sessions and the expensive, oddly specific meal plans, but they’ve also put themselves at greater risk for osteoporosis, depression, injury, and the host of other health problems that go along with starvation and overtraining. I don’t believe, as Anderson does that “if your body looks old at 50, it’s only because you’re not making the effort” or that “every woman whose body changes post-pregnancy is just lazy.” I certainly do believe that every woman should eat right and be active. Every woman should strive to be at a healthy weight. Every woman should find a way to feel good about the way she looks. Not that you shouldn’t work hard, but no woman needs to dedicate a huge chunk of her day and finances to get to where she wants to be health and fitness wise when there are easier, safer and more effective ways to get there. Don’t we all have important work to do? I am aware that there are a lot of Anderson groupies out there — as well as rabid detractors. I’d like to hear from you. Post your comments here or tweet me. Jason Merritt, Getty Images Giuliana Rancic didn’t end up with nearly 2 million Twitter followers by accident — she earned them by answering the questions people tweeted her and offering insider tips on diet, fitness, beauty and more. And although the “E! News” host absolutely loved sharing the information, trying to keep her answers to 140 characters got “out of hand,” she told us. And so Rancic’s new site, FabFitFun, was born. FabFitFun FabFitFun is a handy site filled with Rancic’s often Hollywood-based tips on fitness, health, diet, beauty and more. “But more importantly, it’s a free daily e-mail that goes out every single day,” Rancic said. “There’s everything from kettlebell workouts to an interview I just did with Lisa Ling — we like to throw in women we admire.” She’s especially excited to share her tips for snacks and hopes to clear up some of the mystery women face when trying to pick a diet-friendly bite to eat. “I have a lot of great snacks. I mean, you can Google ‘healthy snacks’ and read what comes up, but some of it’s processed and so many girls are on the run and working more than ever,” Rancic said. “If you can be a smart snacker during the day, you can keep your diet on track.” And just for That’s Fit readers, Rancic shared the three things she always has in her gym bag. First, the Alex Bottle, which she just got in a gift bag and loves because its unique design makes it easy to clean or customize. Then there’s her iPad, so she can run and read — with the font enlarged, of course. (Mostly biographies, in case you were wondering.) Third, she always has packets of eBoost, a B-12 powder that gives her energy for her workout. Rancic the Runner In addition to launching FabFitFun, Rancic has decided to train for her first marathon. However, the race is still being debated within the Rancic household. “I wanted to be really ambitious and do L.A., which is in March. [My husband] doesn’t think we can get ready for it,” Rancic said. She disagrees, however, based on the fact that she completed a half marathon with, quite literally, no training at all. “A few years ago, I was running five days a week, five or six miles. It was easy. But then I started going through IVF, and there wasn’t a day I’d ever go over three miles. I would maybe do three miles of walking and sprinting once a week,” she recalled. After running three miles a few days before the race, she realized it was going to be tough, but she got through the race by taking the pressure off herself and giving herself permission to stop and walk, even though it turned out not to be an issue. “I told my husband, ‘You know what? I’m a crazy Italian. I’m super determined. I’m going to make it to 26 miles.’ But he said, ‘Honey, there’s a big difference between 13 miles and 26.’ So, maybe Chicago,” said Rancic. The training shouldn’t be much of a problem for the Rancics — running together has become a time for them to chat and reconnect. “When we first started dating, we would talk [while running], then when we got married, we would have our iPod. Now, it’s funny — in the past year we’ve gotten back to just talking, and it’s really nice.” Fitness and Infertility Rancic has been quite candid about her struggles with infertility, from her doctor’s instruction to gain weight to having to go through two rounds of IVF treatments, the first of which resulted in a miscarriage and the second without pregnancy. We had to ask how Rancic’s plans to become a marathoner have affected that aspect of her life. “To be honest, we’re not trying any more. We’re not doing IVF, we’re not doing IUI, we’re taking a break. It’s a good time to get back to who I am,” Rancic said. “Thinking back on that 13-mile run, for the first time in a couple years, I felt like I was in control of my body again. I felt like for so long, my body had been turned over to medical labs and doctors and ultrasound machines. It was hideous. I felt like a lab rat,” she told us. “We went back for a second round of IVF, and sadly, it wasn’t successful, so we thought, ‘Let’s just take a break.’ And it’s been the greatest thing for our marriage. We’re so happy, and we’re having the best time.” She’s thrilled to be back in her exercise routine, too. “I’m in the shape I love to be in,” Rancic said. “I love to exercise. I love to eat healthy. Your body is all you’ve got; you’ve got to take good care of it. It’s really not as much about vanity as it is about feeling good. I like waking up healthy. I don’t like waking up feeling bloated, full, hungover. When I was taking the medicine [for IVF], the hormones were driving me crazy, and I was eating things I wouldn’t normally eat and I could never work out. And it was worth it, right? Because I’d have a baby in the end. And so, when it doesn’t work, you’re kind of over it for a little bit and excited to get back to who you are. “I really don’t know when this break is going to end, because it’s kind of going amazingly well,” she said. “If Bill and I get pregnant naturally, super! If we never have kids, it’s fine, too. We’ve got an amazing life together, and we’re family, with or without kids.” Rancic hopes that her attitude can help other women who feel like they need to be defined by marriage or having babies. “What defined me was working my ass off and getting to where I am and realizing that I did that by myself,” she said. “I didn’t sleep with anyone, I didn’t have a rich uncle in Hollywood, you know? I was just an immigrant chick from Naples, Italy, who just had a dream. I am complete because of that — anything from here is just a bonus.” Permalink | Email this | Comments

Getty Images Every dieter has a certain time of day they absolutely dread. They stay the course just fine — until their own personal witching hour strikes. Then the diet resolve melts and suddenly the blueberry muffin, chips, pasta alfredo or ice cream suddenly don’t seem to have that many calories, so why not have a little? Needless to say, consistent caving in to temptation can really frustrate your weight loss efforts. Fortunately, with some careful planning you can hold firm when you’re in your danger zone. Here, Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, shares his strategies for navigating those difficult moments so you stay on track. Danger Zone: Breakfast pastries in the break room at work Diet Protector 1: Eat breakfast at home. “If you’re ravenous when you get to work, it’s harder to avoid the temptation,” says Dr. Oz. Make sure your breakfast has a good mix of protein and healthy carbs, like eggs and whole wheat toast or steel-cut oatmeal with raisins and nuts, to keep you full through the morning so you’re not even tempted to check out the doughnuts. No time to sit and eat? Try a smoothie made with bananas, low-fat soy milk and crushed pineapple when you need to eat breakfast on the go. Diet Protector 2: Move your feet – not your mouth. “Instead of heading for the break room, walk the stairs in your office for five minutes,” suggests Dr. Oz. “That’ll burn a few calories and give you an energy boost in the process.” Danger Zone: Lunch-Time Client Meeting Diet Protector 1: Prescreen the menu. These days you can find most restaurant menus online. Looking it over before your lunch meeting — especially if the menu is extensive — gives you more time to pick out your entr

Liz Before Every week, we introduce you to bloggers who share their weight-loss journeys and hefty doses of inspiration with their readers. This week’s featured blogger is Liz of Liz Taylor’s Life. Name: Liz Taylor Age: 21 Height: 5 feet, 4 inches Start Weight: 270 pounds Current Weight: 170 pounds Goal Weight: 135 pounds My Weight Loss Approach: I was a very heavy child growing up. My parents never really restricted what I could eat nor did they restrict my portions. I gained most of my weight in 2007 because I had just graduated high school and was working and going to school. I often ate fast food in huge portions, and I never exercised. I used to take showers with the light off just so I would not have to see my reflection in the bathroom mirror. I was made fun of so much in high school that I was walked to my classes by the student resource officer. I grew to loathe myself. I would look at pictures of myself and think I looked disgusting. I went to my primary care doctor in 2008 because of depression due to my weight and looks. When he weighed me he was astonished at the weight I had gained since my visit just one year earlier. I was nearly 270 pounds at 19 years old. It was in that office in the middle of the afternoon that I made a decision: I could not live my life like that anymore. I decided to lose the weight and dedicate myself to improving myself and my self-image and helping others. Liz Now I now look at exercising and healthy eating as a lifestyle, not just something I need to do for a little while. I have found ways to love exercise, which has truly helped me stay on the path of being healthy. The joy I have found from dedicating myself to health and fitness goes much deeper than losing weight. For the first time in my life, I truly believe in myself. Why I wanted to blog about it: I know there are so many more people out there who are going through the same thing. I didn’t want anyone else to have to go through the misery I felt because of my weight. I knew if I wrote about my struggle and what I do to lose weight and get healthy, other people would relate, and maybe they would be able to lose weight, too. The best part of blogging is: The best part of blogging is when I touch other people’s lives. My weight has been such a hard struggle since I was a young child, and I know there are so many other people out there with this same issue. In helping other people, I am constantly helping and bettering myself. .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url(“http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon”) no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Blogging Helped Rita Keep Off 80 Pounds Scales, Blogging and Birthdays Julie Conquered Compulsive Overeating and Lost 100 Pounds Best comment I’ve received: A woman who works out in the gym I go to told me that she is 18 years old and feels and hates the way she looks. She says she always sees me in the gym working out and that since I have joined, she has noticed my weight drop significantly. She told me that she watches what I do for my routines and tries to do the same, and she’s lost 15 pounds since Halloween as a result. She cried and told me that it was the best feeling of her life. What’s next for my blog: I’m working on turning my blog into a full website to help men and women achieve a healthy lifestyle for life. Not only do I want to blog about my exercise and nutrition tips, stories and experiences, but I also want to interview different doctors and fitness professionals on their tips and secrets. I’d like to conduct research in the health and fitness field to find new ideas and also offer lifestyle tips for finances, fashion and relationships. My vision is a full-on healthy lifestyle website. Keep up with Liz on her blog as she continues to work toward her goals. Permalink | Email this | Comments
