Jason Merritt, Getty Images Giuliana Rancic didn't end up with nearly 2 million Twitter followers by accident -- she earned them by answering the questions people tweeted her and offering insider tips on diet, fitness, beauty and more. And although the "E! News" host absolutely loved sharing the information, trying to keep her answers to 140 characters got "out of hand," she told us. And so Rancic's new site, FabFitFun, was born. FabFitFun FabFitFun is a handy site filled with Rancic's often Hollywood-based tips on fitness, health, diet, beauty and more. "But more importantly, it's a free daily e-mail that goes out every single day," Rancic said. "There's everything from kettlebell workouts to an interview I just did with Lisa Ling -- we like to throw in women we admire." She's especially excited to share her tips for snacks and hopes to clear up some of the mystery women face when trying to pick a diet-friendly bite to eat. "I have a lot of great snacks. I mean, you can Google 'healthy snacks' and read what comes up, but some of it's processed and so many girls are on the run and working more than ever," Rancic said. "If you can be a smart snacker during the day, you can keep your diet on track." And just for That's Fit readers, Rancic shared the three things she always has in her gym bag. First, the Alex Bottle, which she just got in a gift bag and loves because its unique design makes it easy to clean or customize. Then there's her iPad, so she can run and read -- with the font enlarged, of course. (Mostly biographies, in case you were wondering.) Third, she always has packets of eBoost, a B-12 powder that gives her energy for her workout. Rancic the Runner In addition to launching FabFitFun, Rancic has decided to train for her first marathon. However, the race is still being debated within the Rancic household. "I wanted to be really ambitious and do L.A., which is in March. [My husband] doesn't think we can get ready for it," Rancic said. She disagrees, however, based on the fact that she completed a half marathon with, quite literally, no training at all. "A few years ago, I was running five days a week, five or six miles. It was easy. But then I started going through IVF, and there wasn't a day I'd ever go over three miles. I would maybe do three miles of walking and sprinting once a week," she recalled. After running three miles a few days before the race, she realized it was going to be tough, but she got through the race by taking the pressure off herself and giving herself permission to stop and walk, even though it turned out not to be an issue. "I told my husband, 'You know what? I'm a crazy Italian. I'm super determined. I'm going to make it to 26 miles.' But he said, 'Honey, there's a big difference between 13 miles and 26.' So, maybe Chicago," said Rancic. The training shouldn't be much of a problem for the Rancics -- running together has become a time for them to chat and reconnect. "When we first started dating, we would talk [while running], then when we got married, we would have our iPod. Now, it's funny -- in the past year we've gotten back to just talking, and it's really nice." Fitness and Infertility Rancic has been quite candid about her struggles with infertility, from her doctor's instruction to gain weight to having to go through two rounds of IVF treatments, the first of which resulted in a miscarriage and the second without pregnancy. We had to ask how Rancic's plans to become a marathoner have affected that aspect of her life. "To be honest, we're not trying any more. We're not doing IVF, we're not doing IUI, we're taking a break. It's a good time to get back to who I am," Rancic said. "Thinking back on that 13-mile run, for the first time in a couple years, I felt like I was in control of my body again. I felt like for so long, my body had been turned over to medical labs and doctors and ultrasound machines. It was hideous. I felt like a lab rat," she told us. "We went back for a second round of IVF, and sadly, it wasn't successful, so we thought, 'Let's just take a break.' And it's been the greatest thing for our marriage. We're so happy, and we're having the best time." She's thrilled to be back in her exercise routine, too. "I'm in the shape I love to be in," Rancic said. "I love to exercise. I love to eat healthy. Your body is all you've got; you've got to take good care of it. It's really not as much about vanity as it is about feeling good. I like waking up healthy. I don't like waking up feeling bloated, full, hungover. When I was taking the medicine [for IVF], the hormones were driving me crazy, and I was eating things I wouldn't normally eat and I could never work out. And it was worth it, right? Because I'd have a baby in the end. And so, when it doesn't work, you're kind of over it for a little bit and excited to get back to who you are. "I really don't know when this break is going to end, because it's kind of going amazingly well," she said. "If Bill and I get pregnant naturally, super! If we never have kids, it's fine, too. We've got an amazing life together, and we're family, with or without kids." Rancic hopes that her attitude can help other women who feel like they need to be defined by marriage or having babies. "What defined me was working my ass off and getting to where I am and realizing that I did that by myself," she said. "I didn't sleep with anyone, I didn't have a rich uncle in Hollywood, you know? I was just an immigrant chick from Naples, Italy, who just had a dream. I am complete because of that -- anything from here is just a bonus."
Getty Images Every dieter has a certain time of day they absolutely dread. They stay the course just fine -- until their own personal witching hour strikes. Then the diet resolve melts and suddenly the blueberry muffin, chips, pasta alfredo or ice cream suddenly don't seem to have that many calories, so why not have a little? Needless to say, consistent caving in to temptation can really frustrate your weight loss efforts. Fortunately, with some careful planning you can hold firm when you're in your danger zone. Here, Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of The Dr. Oz Show, shares his strategies for navigating those difficult moments so you stay on track. Danger Zone: Breakfast pastries in the break room at work Diet Protector 1: Eat breakfast at home. "If you're ravenous when you get to work, it's harder to avoid the temptation," says Dr. Oz. Make sure your breakfast has a good mix of protein and healthy carbs, like eggs and whole wheat toast or steel-cut oatmeal with raisins and nuts, to keep you full through the morning so you're not even tempted to check out the doughnuts. No time to sit and eat? Try a smoothie made with bananas, low-fat soy milk and crushed pineapple when you need to eat breakfast on the go. Diet Protector 2: Move your feet - not your mouth. "Instead of heading for the break room, walk the stairs in your office for five minutes," suggests Dr. Oz. "That'll burn a few calories and give you an energy boost in the process." Danger Zone: Lunch-Time Client Meeting Diet Protector 1: Prescreen the menu. These days you can find most restaurant menus online. Looking it over before your lunch meeting -- especially if the menu is extensive -- gives you more time to pick out your entr

Getty There are endless diet programs that suggest you take one day "off" and eat whatever you like. I can't count the number of personal trainers I've worked with who advocate this -- it's even a hallmark of the new best-selling book "The 4-Hour Body." It sounds good in theory. After all, you're "deprived" all week, and if you know you can satisfy that gnawing urge for a Krispy Kreme on Sunday, it may make it easier to stick with it the rest of the week, knowing that relief is only a few days away. Oh, if only it were so simple. If you're perfectly healthy (metabolically speaking) and you simply put on weight because you eat a few too many desserts, allowing yourself a "treat" or two one day a week is probably not going to kill you and may -- as the theory suggests -- even make you more motivated to stick with the program the rest of the time. And that's fine if you're one of those folks who can take a bite of chocolate and put the rest away for later. I'm not one of those people. Maybe you're not either. To me, a portion of ice cream is finished when the spoon hits the bottom of the carton. I'm hardly alone. Many people, if not most, who struggle with weight year after year know exactly what I'm talking about. For us, having a little is like telling an alcoholic to drink moderately. A cheat day would be like telling that same alcoholic to go ahead and get wasted one day a week. So that's the first reason I'm not a fan of cheat days. The idea simply doesn't work for a lot of people for whom certain foods are addictive. It whets the appetite for more, starts the whole craving cycle going again and generally ends in disaster. But there's another reason I don't like the concept of cheat days, and it has to do with metabolism. As much as 25 percent of the population, by conservative estimates, have a condition known as insulin resistance, which is at the root of both Type 2 diabetes as well as metabolic syndrome. These folks simply don't process carbs well. Their blood sugar goes up too high when they eat them, and the pancreas oversecretes insulin -- a fat storage hormone -- in response to the increased levels of blood sugar. Low-carb diets correct this within a few days. One big "cheat day" will undo that good faster than you can say "supersize me." As many people know all too well, a cheat meal can easily turn into a binge. And that ain't good. Furthermore, a small study published in Nutrition and Metabolism, in which participants were assigned a high-calorie, high-fat diet of mostly fast food for four weeks, found that even more than two years after the experiment, the participants who ate all of the fast food had the same muscle mass but were heavier overall and had higher increases in body fat compared to the control group. While the study did not look at one-day binges, overeating, even for a few weeks, could potentially have long-term consequences. Now none of this means you can't have an occasional dessert if you're trying to lose weight. Nor does it mean you should swear off "recreational food" forever. But if your cheat day is not one extra slice of pizza but an all-out binge, it might not be the best strategy to improve your health for years to come. But in my opinion, there are three very good reasons not to program regular departures from healthy eating into your weight loss program. One, it can undo a lot of good in a very quick period of time. Two, it can stir up the cravings you've tried hard to tame. (Think having just one cigarette after you quit for a week. Bye-bye, "nonsmoker.") Three, it can lead to long-term consequences if you overdo it. Of course, if you're one of those lucky people who truly understands the word "moderation" and can put the rest of that ice cream back in the freezer after you've had your half-cup portion, then you can disregard my warnings. If you're not, maybe you should rethink the cheat day concept. Jonny Bowden, author, nutritionist and weight loss coach, cuts through all the misconceptions about diet and fitness to help you transform your body, your health and your life.
Gregory Bull, AP It's been almost a year since the 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, devastating the capital and largest city, Port-au-Prince and severely injuring, killing or affecting millions of people. Off the Mat, Into the World -- a global community of yoga practitioners for social change -- is launching a call to action to help our neighbors in Haiti on the anniversary of this catastrophe. "We believe in the power of the yoga community to come together and make a difference," said Suzanne Sterling, co-founder of OTM. "As part of that, we initiate humanitarian projects all over the world, and Haiti is a major focus for us because not enough is getting done over there." Their efforts started last year when 40 yoga studios were assembled and raised more than $18,000 in one day for Partners in Health, a medical nonprofit that has long worked in Haiti. "We demonstrated our ability to come together as community, rally for a dire cause and make a significant financial impact." This year, the organization wants to go even bigger. Yogis for Haiti Day will be held on the anniversary of the earthquake, January 12, to honor the people of Haiti and all that they have been through over the past year. The goal is to raise $40,000 and send a strong message to the Haitian community that they have not been forgotten. As part of this day, the entire yoga community is invited to practice for Haiti and support relief efforts. Individuals can dedicate their yoga practice to the Haitian people and fundraise/donate to the cause. Yoga studios are also joining forces and being asked to give a percentage of that day's revenue (suggested is 25-50 percent). While the amount raised is important, what is more important according to OTM is the collective global efforts to support this essential cause where millions of people are still in great need. .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Cholera Deaths in Haiti Top 1,000 Energize and Relax With Yoga Running 2,500 Miles for AIDS Orphans A study by the Inter-American Development Bank, as reported by The New York Times, estimated that the total cost of the Haitian disaster was between $7.2 billion to $13.2 billion, based on a death toll from 200,000 to 250,000. Another 1.5 million Haitians were displaced from their homes. Six months after the earthquake, a mere 28,000 had moved into new homes. At the end of October, announcements came of the country's cholera outbreak, in which almost 100,000 people have been infected and more than 2,100 have died. "Yoga means union," said Sterling. "So it makes sense to unify here because we know the power of the yoga community can be huge." Here are some specific ways to take part in Yogis for Haiti Day: Practice seva. Host a themed yoga class commemorating this event and dedicating the collective intention to Haiti. Promote Yogis for Haiti Day to your community. OTM provides a downloadable online tool kit with resources. Fundraise for Haitian relief efforts. Collect donations from fellow students, studios and your community. Get creative! Auction off a day with a yoga teacher, set up a viral campaign or hold a yoga party. In addition to January 12, OTM is dedicating its Global Seva Challenge for 2011 to raising $750,000 for local Haitian nonprofits to bring long-term sustainability solutions to their community through microloans, green building, clean water and leadership life skills. "I want the people of Haiti to know that even from depths of devastation, it's possible to rise up and become stronger than ever before," added Sterling. "Yoga tends to dismantle us in the process and then we come back better and stronger. There's no reason why this can't happen for an entire community."
Getty Images As much as I love the holidays, my waistline is very glad that the season of eating is over. I feel like I was mindlessly wandering through various valleys full of sugar-packed treats and carb-heavy side dishes. I am still trying to get back to my pre-Christmas weight and continue my journey toward my goal weight. I am really excited about the New Year! Unfortunately, I've always been one of the "oh, I'll start Monday" type of person, meaning that I always look for a good time to start losing weight, exercising, getting back on track, etc. In reality, every day and every meal is a good time to get back on the healthy track; however, when you are someone like me who really looks forward to a Monday-like start date, the first Monday of a new month of a brand-new year is a gold mine in terms of weight loss motivation. I am so sick of having one of my New Year's resolutions be to lose weight. So my resolution of 2011 is to not start 2012 with a weight loss resolution. My resolution for 2011 is to finally get to a healthy, manageable weight. How do I do that? First, I need to focus on all of the things that I've learned up until now: exercise consistently and make better food choices. Let's go a little deeper. Maybe all along my plan has been too broad. Maybe I need to add in smaller steps along the way toward the bigger picture. I've always been the planning type, both in college and in my professional career. I like detailed and specific action points, which is what I need to apply to my weight loss. Here are the ways I'm going to get to meet my New Year's resolution: 1. Run at least 20 miles each month. I currently run about a mile to a mile and a half per session. This means I need to run 15 to 20 times per month. As I (hopefully) increase my mileage during each run, the miles per month may also increase. 2. Exercise at least four times a week for no less than 30 minutes. I can watch television, read a book, talk on the phone and play online for more than 30 minutes at a time. Shouldn't I devote at least 30 minutes of exercise on most days of the week to improve my health? .relatedLinksR{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:right;margin:10px 0 10px 10px;}.relatedLinksL{width:240px;border: 1px solid #CCCCCC;float:left;margin:10px 10px 10px 0;}.relatedLinksL a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedLinksR a{text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;color:#004173;}.relatedListContainer ul{list-style-type:none;padding:0 10px;white-space:normal !important;}.relatedHeader {padding:10px 10px 0;}.relatedHeader h3{font-size:18px;color:#000000;border-bottom:1px dotted #CCCCCC;padding-bottom:4px;}.relatedHeader{font-size:18px;color:#000000;}.relatedListContainer ul li {background:url("http://o.aolcdn.com/os/sphere/art/blue-icon") no-repeat scroll 0 7px transparent;margin-bottom:3px;padding-left:10px;} Related Stories Can't Stick to Your New Year's Resolution? Blame Your Brain Free Nutrition Consultations to Help You Reach Your Weight Loss Goal Lisa's New Year Diet Led to a 50-Pound Weight Loss 3. Cut fried foods out of my diet completely. Over the course of this blog I have done an excellent job of limiting fried foods, such as French fries and potato chips, but they are my fall-back comfort foods. Right now, I know that I am not at a point in my journey where I can allow myself to enjoy these foods in small doses or on special occasions. 4. I will focus on smaller milestones. I have set small rewards for every five to 10 pounds of weight loss. Rewards range from new songs on my MP3 player at my next five-pound loss to a $100 shopping trip when I hit my goal weigh. I have already started saving so that I can treat myself to a few new things. To aid in my weight loss, I will track what I eat, as well as my exercise minutes. I have a separate calendar for writing down my workouts for each day. I can honestly say I have never had more determination or drive to get to where I need to be in terms of my weight, and I look forward to the challenges and successes of 2011!
