We highly recommend you check out this article in Your Teen Magazine by CCED’s clinical director, Dr. Lucene Wisniewski: Professional Advice on Eating Disorders
I’m delighted to recommend Joanna Poppink’s book, Healing Your Hungry Heart: Recovering from Your Eating Disorder . I was in close communication with Joanna while she was writing this book, and I know the heart and wisdom she poured into the pages. When I read early versions of the manuscript, I knew we had a fresh new voice bringing inspiration and practical tools for eating disorder recovery. Joanna wrote this book for mature women. I believe you will find it of great value in your own recovery and in understanding the struggles of those you love. Healing Your Hungry Heart (Conari Press, 2011) gives frank descriptions of the often secret emotional and personal challenges of living with an eating disorder and how to use them as opportunities for healing. Using stories from her personal struggles with bulimia along with stories from a wide range of women she has known, Joanna Poppink offers hope, inspiration and specific healing practices. She writes to adult women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond.

I was in the checkout line at the local health food store when the June issue of Women’s Health caught my eye. The cover features a photo of a young woman who is very attractive, but pathologically thin. To a digital artist, it was obvious that the photo had been extensively airbrushed. The actual model is certainly closer to a healthy body weight than the woman in this photo. Whew! But why did the magazine airbrush a photo of perfectly healthy young woman to the point where she looks like an emaciated 12-year-old? And why does this photo appear on the cover of a magazine with the ironic title of “Women’s Health”? And even more to the point, why am I staring at this cover while I’m waiting in line at a health food store ? I rarely read women’s magazines, but lately I’ve been forcing myself to pay attention. There’s been a lot of talk over the years about body image issues that may be related to unrealistic portrayal of women’s bodies in the media, but most of it is just that. Talk. Witness the recent “scandal” that erupted when Complex accidentally posted the un-retouched version of Kim Kardashian’s cover photo. Complex eventually yanked the photo and replaced it with the version shown at right, below, which shaved inches from Kardashian’s legs and waist and even lightened her skin. Kardashian responded admirably on her blog, saying: “So what: I have a little cellulite. I’m proud of my body and my curves and this picture coming out is probably helpful for everyone to see that just because I am on the cover of a magazine doesn’t mean I’m perfect.” And in the next breath she took it all back with the following “mea culpa” for committing the sin of “fatness”: At the same time as this Complex shoot, I was gearing up for my fitness DVD and you should see my thighs now!!! Fortunately, there’s a new organization that shows signs of moving from talk to action. In June of this year, the American Medical Association adopted a new policy to “discourage the altering of photographs in a manner that could promote unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image”. In a June 21 press release , the AMA noted that “exposure to media-propagated images of unrealistic body images” has been linked to “eating disorders and other child and adolescent health problems.” The group wants advertisers to adopt policies that would curtail altering photographs that lead to “models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software.” The Girl Scouts of America accepted the challenge and joined with the AMA to launch the Healthy MEdia: Commission for Positive Images of Women and Girls campaign . The commission, co-chaired by actor Geena Davis and former FCC Commissioner Deborah Taylor Tate, will develop recommendations for promoting positive media images. For more information, visit the Healthy MEdia web site.

By, Dr. Mark Warren One of the most exciting moments at the AED annual conference was the official presentation of the Critical Points for Early Recognition and Medical Risk Management in the Care of Individuals with Eating Disorders . AED has invested significant time, energy and resources in putting together the first true guide to assist primary care physicians who may not have received adequate training in this area. In this blog today we would like to thank the many individuals and groups who participated in creating this important document and when you have a moment please go to aedweb.org and download the brochure. The original idea for this brochure, which is intended to help physicians provide effective evidence based care in the treatment of patients with eating disorders originated from family members with particular impetus from Mary Beth Krohel. We want to thank her for her leadership.
