It is possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. But at what cost? And can everybody do it? Basically each one of us can lose fat and gain muscle, but some of us will have an easier time. Usually the people that are just starting to lose weight and never used to exercise will get the best results. Why is this? Their body isn’t used to exercising and fat loss. So when they start to exercise to lose fat , their muscles get bigger. It is a byproduct of the weight loss process they are going through. That is if they decide to use exercising as a way of losing weight. If you choose to follow only an all diet approach to weight loss, you can’t expect to gain muscles. You gain muscles only by working them out, by breaking their fibers and letting your body make them tougher. When it comes to exercising there is the old age debate: cardio or strength training . Well strength training is the overall winner, because it helps you gain muscle and burn fat longer than cardio. But cardio helps you get leaner muscles, increases your physical endurance and helps you burn more calories on the spot – while exercising. Unfortunately, by doing too much cardio you force your body to consume your muscle mass as a source of fast energy. Be very careful you don’t go overboard when you do your cardio exercises. Otherwise you will jeopardize your muscle gaining efforts. As I’ve said. If you are a beginner you will have an easy time losing weight and gaining muscles. But if you have repeatedly starved your body using crazy diets to lose weight, or if you are a bodybuilder, it will probably take a whole lot of more work to get smaller results. You body has set up many defenses to protect you from what it considers dangerous situations. You mustn’t blame it. You’ll just have to work around them.

Having well toned, defined arms and triceps is a grand goal to have. Unfortunately getting them is harder than wishing for them. But here is a short guide to get you there. First of all get out of your head the idea of spot reduction. It doesn’t work. You can’t lose weight only from a certain part of your body by working only those muscles. Fat loss doesn’t work that way. Your body has a set pattern in which it gains and loses body fat. Usually the order in which you packed the excess weight is the exact opposite order you will lose it. So if the last fat you got stuck with landed on your arms or legs, it will be the first one to to. Keeping this in mind you can appreciate how long it will take to get the arms you want. Some people have a harder time losing weight from their belly, others from their legs while others from their arms and back. It depends in which category you fall. But… When it comes to fast fat loss , the same rules apply each time. You have to get on a healthy diet and exercise to lose weight. It doesn’t matter if you want to lose weight from your belly or arms. You have to lose weight from your whole body to see significant improvement on the body parts you are targeting. Still, you should continue exercising your arms and triceps. What is the point of losing the excess fat from them if they don’t look toned and defined. Weak arms aren’t at all sexy. So make sure you include in your exercise routine arm and triceps exercises. Exercising is good. It keeps you healthy and it helps you lose weight faster . Some trainers encourage you to do cardio exercises to lose weight (most of them). Others are fans of strength training exercises as a means to burn fat (the minority). I for one think you should do a mixture of cardio and strength exercises for the best results. It’s that one exercise is better than the others. It is just that each type of exercise has his own unique string points and weaknesses. Cardio exercises are great for burning fat while you exercise. It is true it takes your body 20 minutes to react to your cardio exercise and start burning fat. But once it does, boy oh boy, the fat literally melts off of you. The downside of doing cardio is that your body needs 20 minutes to warm up to the idea of burning the fat. It needs that time to consume the blood sugar for energy. Once that energy supply is gone it needs to redirect its focus on your fat supply for energy. Thus making you burn fat literally. Strength training workouts focus more on building leaner more powerful muscles. This implies lifting heavy weights to train your muscles. Short bursts of extreme effort – lifting the weights – are followed by periods of rest. The extreme effort breaks your muscle fibers, forcing your body to repair the muscles and make them more stronger. By doing this type of exercises you send a clear message to your body: “I need more strength”. And your body does everything to comply with your wish. During the workout itself you don’t burn that many calories or fat. You just don’t get to exercise long enough. The periods of effort are too brief. Of course you can lift weights the cardio style: lots of reps using easy to lift weight but you would be getting a cardio workout not a strength training workout. But if you do a true strength training workout. Serious heavy lifting you will get an amazing fat burning effect . Not during the workout but after it. You see all that damaged muscle has to be repaired and made stringer. To do this your body needs lots of resources and energy. To get the energy it starts burning off fat. So you lose weight. In some studies the fat burning effect lasted for up to 12 hours after the strength training workout. Now that’s a long time to burn fat. In fact the scientists concluded that strength training exercises are in fact better for fat loss than cardio exercises – too bad the trainers use antiquated information more often than not. In my opinion for the best fat burning effect you should mix the two kinds of exercise. Start with a light cardio routine or a good warming up routine . This will help you avoid injuries. Then go into a good strength training routine and work up a little sweat. After you train your muscles and burn a big part of the sugar from your bloodstream, go and do 30 to 45 minutes of cardio. Since you don’t have that much blood sugar to burn you will start burning fat faster and at an accelerated rate. Finish your workout with 5 minutes of cooling down doing some light cardio and stretching – to avoid injuries. After the workout the strength training workout after effect will continue to burn off the excess fat. This will lead to even more fat loss. Perfect. If you don’t have the time to do the strength training and cardio exercises in one workout I recommend you do first the strength training workout and later that day the cardio exercises. This order should give you the best fat burning results in the long run. In my opinion it’s not weather you should do one or the other. You must do them both and in the correct sequence to get the best results. First strength training then cardio. But if you can’t, do whatever kind of exercises you can when you can, as long as you exercise. Just my 2 cents.

Are you too busy to exercise? Don’t fret. If you have a couple of minutes from time to time, you have enough time to exercise. You don’t need one full hour to exercise. A couple of minutes is enough – studies show. A little exercise from time to time, has the same health benefits as a hour long workout. Mind you I said the same benefits. This doesn’t mean that the benefits are as strong and beneficial as the long term workout. But if you don’t have enough time, any form of exercise is better than no exercise. Your body still benefits from it – maybe not as much, but hey a little is better than nothing. By exercising each time you have some free time you will lose weight and build your endurance. For example if you just have 1 minute, maybe you can do some squats, or some pushups. This kind of exercises work out lots of muscles in your body fast. And that should be the goal of the exercises you choose to do. Make sure you work out as many muscles as possible. Also don’t ignore walking. More walking is a great way to exercise. The idea is to do something. Any kind of exercising is better than not exercising. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to dedicate 1 full hour for exercising, split your workout throughout the day. If you need to use some home exercise equipment do those exercises while you are working around home. Or maybe use the fitness gym from work (if you have one). If you pass a gym on your way home maybe you can stop for 15 minutes and pump some iron. Fast and sweet. I am sure the gym owner won’t mind, especially if you pay for the time you use. Use your imagination and you will spot opportunities to exercise throughout the day. Thrust me.
